Type Locality and Naming

Along Kurek, Yakkobag Mountains, Southwest Gissar. N.V. Beznosov, V.V. Kurbatov used the name given by G.S. Chikryzov (1950), who mapped similar formations in the Yakkobag Mountains as the Kurek subformation. Stratotype in the Kyzyltash section, Yakkobag Mountains, South-West. Gissar. Uppermost formation of Kugitang Gr in South Gissar (Deeper-water and Evaporite for Late Jurassic)

Synonym: Kurek Suite, Курекская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Pelitomorphic, algal (blue-green) limestones (stagnant waters) and pelitic, oolitic, organogenic-psammitic limestones (moving waters) with characteristic "eyed" texture. Thickness 40-190m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

With visible conformity, it lies on the Zakharlin Fm, or on the Zarmas Fm. In Susyztau (Pyanjob), the formation lies on the Lower Oxfordian reef complex.

Upper contact

It is overlain by the Gaurdak Gr (the member of Lower Anhydrites or Gardarin Fm).

Regional extent

Southwest Gissar, its southern slope, Mechetli. Buhara-Karshinsky district borehole. Kurek Fm laterally replaced in Susyztau by the Middle Oxfordian reef complex, and in Mechetli or on the Buhara steppe by the Tupalang Fm of Late Oxfordian - Early Kimmeridgian (?) age of Kurek Fm in Kugitangtau is determined by its position on limestones containing Middle Oxfordian ammonites.

Fossils

Contains marine bivalve mollusks - Plesiocyprina gissarensis Rep., Camptonectes duabensis Rep.; brachiopods - Pastepithyris bauchini et., P. etalloni Roll. and others; algae; Dinosaur tracks - Megalosauropus uzbekistanicus Gab. et Kurb., Camptosauropus vialovi Gab. et Kurb.

In Baysuntau, Chakchar, Yakkobag Mountains, and Surkhantau, Late Oxfordian - Early Kimmeridgian marine bivalve mollusks were identified in Kurek Fm.
